Festivall!!! July 30th was a great day - wait..NOT a great day, but an AMAZING DAY! A day full of excitement, surprises and new fun facts about the media. On Saturday, July 30th, me, Georgette, Daniel and Valeria went to the NYC Digital Waves Youth Media Festival in Manhattan at WNYC’s The Greene Space. It was awesome!! Why? Well, to start off, I had free breakfast. I also got free headphones, which by the way, didn’t work. But at least I got a shirt. Anyways, I learned…

I had the opportunity to attend the NYC Digital Waves Youth Festival at WNYC’s The Greene Space on behalf of the VHOS (Virtual Hall of Science) team at NYSCI (New York Hall of Science)! It was a huge benefit for me because it taught me many new things about mass media and radio production. At the event, we were able to choose two workshops to attend. I chose to go to the “DYI, DIF” (Do It Yourself, Do It Free) workshop,…

On Saturday, September 30, The LAMP, Radio Rookies, RHI Radio and Radio Rootz got together to put on the first ever New York City Digital Waves Youth Media Festival. The day was jam-packed with ways for youth to create their own audio pieces, think critically about media, learn about careers in media and much more. We’re already looking forward to next year!
Check out our Flickr set for even more pictures from the day.

I have a confession to make. Even though I’ve worked in radio for 13 years, I only have the vaguest notion of the mechanics and science of sound. I also don’t have the best of ears—I know when a piece is beautifully mixed and everything seems to sparkle and sing as it carries you through a story, but I can’t always tell you exactly exactly WHY it’s better than the earlier cut. My strengths lie elsewhere (or at least I like to think they do). Anyway, that’s why I went to Tony Schloss’s workshop “All Things Audio.” Tony started and…

The first ever New York City Digital Waves Youth Media Festival officially kicked off on July 30, 2011. Amidst the hot weather outside, youth producers and educators made their way downtown for an exciting day of celebration, sharing, and learning more about youth media work.
Out of five workshops that were offered during the day, one of them included a panel hosted by Miguel Macias called “DIY, DIF: Do it Yourself, Do it for Free” which showcased basic functions to maneuvering a free audio editor and recorder called Audacity. Attendees came from Blunt Youth Radio in…

Media and Youth. These are two words that provide an endless streams of creativity, and two thing that are clearly represented in the 2011 NYC Digital Waves Youth Media Festival.
There were many different workshops featured in this festival, like “All Things Audio” and “DIY DIF (Do It Yourself, Do It Free)” just to name two. I had the pleasure of sitting in one of the workshops called “Turn Your Creative Juices On,” which was directed by Marisa Jahn—an artist, writer and community organizer who is also the Deputy Director of People’s Production House. She showed us a…

For three drawn out and strenuous months, I have endlessly been working on a radio piece about growing up with parents with multiple sclerosis—a great story. In fact, my life has been the computer screen, a recorder and a cup of joe. Surprisingly, I finished it last night at 3am and was so thrilled with excitement that I hurried to call my friend and asked her for some feedback, and she blandly said “It was good.”
Isn’t it irritating when people just say something is “good” and don’t give you any helpful criticism that will make your work better?…

Radio is such a small thing these days. When I ask young people on their first day at RHI Radio if they listen to the radio, their answer is almost invariably no. No one has a radio to begin with, and there is no need to wait for a DJ to play a song you want to hear. It is much easier to go and get it one way or other from the cloud. So why do I run a Youth Radio program? Why teach young people to create audio stories of their lives and communities?
There once…

Gearing up for the festival, we’re excited to be locking down our presenters for the sessions and panels, and awesome judges for the audio-slam competition! Opening the breakout sessions will be Jones Franzel (left) from Generation PRX. We’re highlighting Jones, as she’s been a forerunner in everything youth radio. She started the social networking site Generation PRX (GenPRX) for youth radio producers, whether you’re a maker, educator, organization or a radio station – it’s been a hub to exchange ideas, connect and youth to be heard.
One of the great things about GenPRX is that it gives…
